Life as a Live Chat Agent

As you can now see, going into live chat can be a great decision. It puts you in pole position to make top dollar in a market with thousands of jobs. But what does it mean to become a live chat agent? What will you do, and how will you do it? We’ll answer those questions in this lesson.


Once hired as a live chat agent, you will usually work from your own home—or from anywhere else you choose. As long as you can get online, you are good to go. So you may want to spend a few hours at a local cafe, pop round to visit a friend...or just settle onto your sofa with a cup of Joe and some cool music. It’s up to you. You have the freedom to do things your way, as long as you get the job done.

You will need to use a laptop, as you may have several chats open simultaneously. You could do this on your phone at a pinch, but it is much easier using a desktop machine. Your company will provide you with the software you need. In most cases, you don’t need to download anything. You simply get online and log in with the details provided.


Once you have logged in, you will signal that you are ready to start work. Then you are on your way. Thanks to the company’s training program, you will know what to do and how to do it. Better still, the work is not only rewarding financially but good fun, too.


Here’s how things work in a typical live chat system. Once you log in, you will be able to see who is waiting for help. Next, you can browse through the queue of people waiting and select someone to engage with. This will usually be the first person in the queue—the one who has been waiting for the longest time (hopefully no more than a minute or two).   

Once the chat has started, you can ask the visitor how you can help. Most of the time, you will find that the questions people ask are simple ones. For example, people will want more information on the products or may have questions about how to pay, when the item will be delivered, etc.

You will have a Knowledge Base to assist you, so there’s no need to panic if you get a question that looks difficult. The Knowledge Base is a library of all the information you need to help people. You will nearly always find the answers you need in there. If you are still stumped, you can ask your colleagues for advice.


As with any job, your first day may seem a little nerve-wracking, as you have a lot to learn. But you will soon pick things up. Then you will find you can answer 9 out of 10 queries off the top of your head.


Remember that your Team Leader is always on hand to help you. So if anything doesn’t make sense, or you don’t know what to do, just reach out. You will get all the help you need to keep things flowing smoothly. 


When it’s time to finish for the day, you simply log out of the system. The hours you have worked are recorded automatically, so you can get paid at the end of the week.


Of course, the best part about finishing work is that you don’t have to face a grueling commute. No more spending an hour stuck in traffic or trying to squeeze onto crowded trains or buses. Instead, just stretch out on the sofa and relax—another day’s pay in the bank and a long evening of leisure ahead of you.

Making Money with Live Chat Jobs

Live chat jobs can be divided into three categories:

Beginner Live Chat Jobs


When you get your first live chat job, you will have no experience or skills—so your pay will naturally be at the lower end of the scale. Yet you can still earn more than you would in most regular day jobs and have a much more enjoyable working environment.

You can make at least $20 an hour right out the gate, working as a Customer Service Assistant. You will be on the front line in this role, talking to customers (and potential customers) every day. Here are some of the tasks you will usually perform:


Pre-sales chat: helping website visitors find their way around and answering basic questions about products and services 


Post-sales chat: dealing with post-sales issues such as confirming delivery times and setting up software


Dealing with complaints: being friendly and helpful when things go wrong to resolve the problem and delight the customer


Offering deals and discounts: assist the company in maximizing revenue from website visitors by offering them promotional pricing


Intermediate Live Chat Jobs


Once you have a little experience in a beginner role, you will be ready to move up to the intermediate level. These jobs are no more demanding, but they require a different skill set. This means you can make extra money without too much effort. 


Intermediate jobs typically start at around $30 an hour, which works out at about $1200 per week. So it’s easy to see how the money starts to add up fast. 


One of the most important jobs at the Intermediate level is that of Subject Matter Expert. In this role, you will acquire detailed knowledge of the company’s products and services and be on hand to provide specialist help. The tasks you will do as a Subject Matter Expert include:


Responding to product queries: provide detailed or technical answers to questions from potential or existing customers


Answering topic questions: helping government or nonprofit organizations answer queries from the general public


Updating a knowledge base: add new information to the company’s ‘library of knowledge’ and revise existing content as necessary


Acting as a Deputy Team Leader: covering for the Team Leader when required and keeping the team running smoothly


Training other agents: using your specialist knowledge to help new team members get up to speed fast


Advanced Live Chat Jobs


Once you’ve got some intermediate-level experience under your belt, it’s time to move up to advanced jobs. The most important role in this category is the job of Team Leader. In this position, you will be leading a group of live chat agents—ensuring that the live chat support process runs smoothly. 

Pay in this role typically starts at around $40 an hour, or $1600 per week. That works out at a whopping $83,200 a year. That’s an excellent income by any standard—and phenomenal for a role you can do from home in your pajamas.  


You may be working with agents all over the world, and your key responsibilities will include:


Managing agents: ensuring that agents do their job well and provide the right level of support to all website visitors


Recruiting agents: helping to hire agents to expand the team or replace other agents who have moved on


Onboarding agents: assisting new hires in learning the ropes and getting up to speed fast

Managing problem customers: dealing with the most serious complaint issues at a senior level


Reporting to senior management: keeping the board up to date with how well the live chat team is doing
