The Role of Keywords
We’ve already mentioned that search engines are very important for bringing new people to read your reviews. But it’s important to emphasize how big this opportunity is.
Google alone processes over 5.6 billion searches every day. That’s an amazing 63,000 searches per second! When you add in all searches on Bing, Yahoo and other search engines, the numbers are staggering. And when people search, they click on the results and visit web pages.
So just think. If your reviews appear high in the search results, you could get a lot of clicks. The question is, how do you optimize your reviews so that you get these clicks? The answer is simple…
Keywords.
A keyword is simply a word or short phrase that identifies what a piece of content is all about. In our earlier example, we wrote a review about Pac-Man. In this case, ‘Pac-Man’ is the most important keyword because it tells the search engines what we are writing about.
The most important factor in getting found in the search engines is to have the right keywords in the right places in your reviews. Get this right and you are on track to get lots of free visitors.
Researching Keywords
Sounds great...but how do you know what keywords to use? That’s where keyword research comes in.
Let’s imagine we want to find some more keywords to use in our Pac-Man review. To get started, we’ll head over to Ubersuggest, which allows us to do keyword research for free. We start by typing our main keyword—pacman—into the search box.
On the results page, we can see that 823,000 people a month are searching for ‘pacman’ in the United States alone. That’s a fantastic start...the more searches the better!
But it’s when you scroll further down the page that we get to the good stuff. Here you can see a list of other related searches. This is the gold we need. We want as many relevant keywords as we can find.
Not all of the keywords will be relevant to your review. For example people searching for ‘pacman frog’ are looking for a real frog that’s as round and yellow as a Pac-Man:
Of course, we’re not interested in people who are searching for frogs. We only want people who are interested in the Pac-Man game, so we’ll ignore that keyword. But there should be several keywords you can use, so make a list of these. Include the number of monthly searches each term gets, too. For example:
Optimizing Your Reviews
Once you’ve got your list, you are ready to put them to good use. Once you’ve written your review, check to see if you have included all of these keywords. If not, it’s time to do some editing.
Revise your review, looking for an opportunity to write in extra keywords. Let’s say you want to insert ‘pacman arcade game’ and you currently have a sentence that says”
“I’ve been playing computer games since I was in elementary school.”
You could change this to:
“I’ve been playing the Pacman arcade game since I was in elementary school.”
Boom! You’ve successfully inserted an extra keyword. So now there’s a chance you’ll be found in the search engines by anyone searching for ‘pacman arcade game.’
Naturally, you should prioritize the keywords that get the most searches. If you include all the keywords, that’s great. But if that’s not practical, focus on the most important ones.
Optimizing your reviews with the right keywords only takes a few minutes, but it can make a big difference to your results. So don’t skip this step...it’s easy and makes a big difference.
